Health Literacy Trainings: More Information

These health literacy trainings are available at no cost! Each training covers an important topic about effectively communicating health information. They can be adapted to any audience and presented in various formats. Contact Doug Seubert for more information or to schedule a training. We are also open to customizing any presentation to meet your needs. Just let us know!

Trainings are free!

There is no cost for these trainings. All supplies and materials used in the trainings are free of charge, and the training facilitator/presenter volunteers all time and all local travel costs. Long distance travel is negotiable. Trainings can also be arranged as webinars or “go to” meetings. Contact Doug Seubert for more information.

Trainings for every audience!

Trainings are available for health care professionals, health care consumers, patients, and the general public. Trainings can be tailored to any specific audience or age group. Prior to scheduling a training, we will speak with you to get the specifics about the audience you want to reach, and we’ll adapt the presentation and materials accordingly. Unfortunately, there is one limitation to the trainings: they are only available in English at this time. However, we are willing to work with translators where available.

Trainings can be customized!

Choose the topics you want covered. We offer training topics for health care professionals as well as training topics for patients/health care consumers. Each topic is available at two levels: beginning or advanced, as well as comprehensive trainings that cover a full topic in depth. Topics can be combined or modified. If you don’t see a topic you want to know more about, suggest it to us and we will design a training to meet your needs.

Choose the format. Trainings are available as presentations, workshops, discussion groups, small classes, or as a combination of two or more formats. While trainings can be “information only,” we find the best results come from trainings that are interactive and include “hands on” exercises, where participants get to practice and use newly learned skills. Some trainings can also be arranged as webinars or “go to” meetings.

Choose the length of time. For simplicity, we offer training sessions in lengths of 20, 40, 60, and 80 minutes. Our trainings are designed to be adaptable to fit the amount of time you have. If you want to add trainings to staff development meetings, or if you are looking for an educational presentation for your organization, we offer short, compact trainings that last no longer that 20 minutes. For a more in-depth training experience, schedule a longer session of 80 minutes or longer, or break-up in-depth trainings into several short sessions. You decide how much time you can commit to these training opportunities, and we’ll adapt to fit your schedule.

Trainings are evidence-based!

Trainings are based on the latest evidence in the fields of health literacy, health communications, and patient safety and activation; and they encompass the current trends in quality improvement and health care reform including meaningful use, accountable care organizations, and patient-centered medical homes. Measurement tools, resources, recommendations and strategies for improving health literacy used in the trainings are all evidence-based and approved by agencies and organizations including Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Institute of Medicine (IOM), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), American Medical Association (AMA), and American Public Health Association (APHA). A detailed bibliography of evidence is provided to support the learning objectives of each training.

Trainings meet academic standards!

Each training includes learning objectives that are measured with pre- and post-testing. Not only does this allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of our trainings, but we are able to provide your organization with the results shortly after each training. While our trainings are not accredited, we will work with you to provide the needed information so that your organization can use these trainings to earn continuing education units.
